Era and Lifecycle

macOS is Apple's operating system for Mac computers, first released in 2001. From a gaming perspective, it is a platform that has long been rather marginal, but is gradually gaining more importance due to the increasing performance of Apple devices and modern technologies.

Unlike classic consoles, macOS is not tied to a single generation of hardware, but is continuously evolving along with Mac computers. In recent years, especially with the advent of Apple Silicon (M1 chips and later), the platform's gaming capabilities have improved significantly.

Hardware revisions and versions

For macOS, "revisions" are represented by individual versions of the system:

Mac OS X (2001) - transition to a modern Unix base. Game support was limited, but stable.

OS X (2013) - unification of the name and gradual improvements in performance and graphics.

macOS (2016) - modern era of the system with an emphasis on the Apple ecosystem and performance. Key releases brought Metal API support and optimizations for Apple Silicon.

Apple Silicon (2020) - transition from Intel processors to its own ARM chips (M1, M2, M3…), which brought a significant increase in performance and efficiency.

Technical highlights and uniqueness

Metal API - a graphical interface developed by Apple for efficient use of hardware and better gaming performance.

Apple Silicon - Apple's own chips offer high performance and energy efficiency, which improves the running of modern games.

App Store and Steam - games are available both through the App Store and through platforms like Steam, although the offer is smaller than on Windows.

Apple ecosystem - connection with iPhone, iPad and other devices, including sharing services and data.

Game Porting Toolkit - a tool that allows developers to more easily port games from Windows to macOS.

The platform offers titles such as Resident Evil Village, No Man's Sky, Baldur's Gate 3 or various indie games, although the total library is smaller than on competing systems.
