Nintendo Switch Platform Overview

Era and Lifecycle

The Nintendo Switch was released in March 2017 and is part of the eighth generation of game consoles. The console combines the features of a home system and a handheld - it can be used connected to a TV or as a fully portable gaming platform.

The Switch was created as a successor to the unsuccessful Wii U console and at the same time united two previously separate lines of Nintendo devices - home consoles and portable systems (e.g., Nintendo 3DS).

Hardware revisions and versions

Nintendo Switch (2017) - the original hybrid model, allowing for both docked and portable play. The console uses detachable Joy-Con controllers that can be used separately or connected to the console.

Nintendo Switch (2019 revision) - an updated version of the original with a more efficient Nvidia Tegra processor, which brought significantly better battery life.

Nintendo Switch Lite (2019) - the controllers are integrated directly into the console body, and the device cannot be connected to a TV. The model is smaller, lighter, and more affordable.

Nintendo Switch OLED (2021) - a premium variant with a larger 7" OLED display, better speakers, a wider stand, and an improved dock with an Ethernet port.

Technical highlights and uniqueness

  • Joy-Con controllers - modular controllers that can be used connected to the console, separated in each hand, or as two separate controllers for multiplayer games. They contain a gyroscope, accelerometer, HD Rumble vibration technology, and an infrared camera.

  • Hybrid concept - the console can function as a home device connected to a TV or as a portable handheld console.

  • Cartridge media - physical games are distributed on small game cards similar to SD cards.

  • Nintendo Switch Online - a subscription service enabling online play, multiplayer, cloud save positions, and access to a library of classic games from the NES, SNES, Game Boy, Nintendo 64, and more.

  • Nintendo-exclusive games, such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

Collector's potential and availability

The following may have a higher collector's value, in particular:

  • Limited editions of the console were released for selected games

  • special color variants of the Joy-Cons

  • preserved pieces in their original packaging

The Switch is not backward compatible with physical games from previous Nintendo consoles (e.g., Wii U, Wii, or 3DS). However, some older titles are available digitally via the Nintendo Switch Online service or as remasters and ports.
