Era and life cycle

Microsoft Windows is one of the most important gaming platforms on personal computers.

Unlike classic consoles, Windows is not tied to specific hardware. The platform runs on a wide range of computers from different manufacturers and configurations.

Hardware revisions and versions

Windows 95 (1995) - the first widely used version of Windows with DirectX support, which significantly helped the development of PC games.

Windows XP (2001) - one of the most popular versions of the system. A stable environment and wide hardware support made it the dominant gaming platform of the first decade of the 21st century.

Windows 7 (2009) - a more modern successor to XP with better optimization and support for new graphics technologies.

Windows 10 (2015) - a unified platform with long-term support, integration of the Microsoft Store, and DirectX 12 technology.

Windows 11 (2021) - a modern version of the system focused, among other things, on gaming technologies such as DirectStorage or Auto HDR.

Technical highlights and uniqueness

• DirectX - a set of interfaces for working with graphics, sound, and input devices. Technologies like DirectX 11 or DirectX 12 are the basis of most modern PC games.

• Open hardware ecosystem - players can choose between different processors, graphics cards, memory, and storage, or gradually improve their computer.

• Distribution platforms - games are available through digital stores like Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store, and others.

• Game modification (modding) - the openness of the platform allows players to modify games, create new maps, content, or even complete modifications.

• Another great advantage of Windows is its huge library of games, which includes titles dating back several decades.

Collector's potential and availability

From a collector's perspective, the following may be of interest:

• older versions of the system on physical installation media

• period gaming PC builds corresponding to a specific era (e.g., Windows 98 or Windows XP gaming PC)

• original boxed editions of PC games

A big advantage of the platform is also its relatively broad backward compatibility. Many older games can still be run on modern versions of the system, possibly using compatibility modes, emulators, or community modifications.
