Oxenfree review: horror on a abandoned island

Gameplay

The controls are simple and intuitive. You select dialogue options with the mouse via "bubbles" that appear above the characters. Movement is handled by the W, A, S, D keys or by clicking on a place in the environment where the main character should go - the character then chooses the appropriate route.

Events on the island sometimes happen quickly and dialogues can be demanding on reaction. The translation to your known language significantly helps to keep the pace and makes it easier to navigate in dynamic conversations.

The island environment can be explored relatively freely, with the emphasis mainly on conversations, choices and interaction with your friends.

Music

The background music is one of the strongest elements of the game. The melodies are memorable and perfectly complement the supernatural atmosphere of the island. I even lisened the music after finishing the game, when some of the songs are suitable for regular listening.

The musical accompaniment here acts as a supporting element of the overall experience – it creates tension, highlights key moments and gives the game a unique audiovisual style.

Graphics

Oxenfree relies on a hand-drawn aesthetic complemented by minimalist stylization. Thanks to this, the game is easily recognizable and visually very distinctive. Key elements of the environment are detailed and immediately catch the eye, while the background seems calmer and does not disturb.

This graphic style not only ages well, but also supports the mysterious atmosphere that fits the theme perfectly.

Story

Thanks to the choices in the dialogues, you can gain new information about the characters and their relationships every time you play. The game thus motivates you to play through it again, because many conversations and reactions cannot be covered in one playthrough.

The story as a whole worked well for me, although I would have liked a more pronounced plot and a more satisfying resolution. It was precisely because of the slightly open or ambiguous ending that I returned to the game several times.

Optimization

The technical processing is very well done. I did not encounter any crashes, hangs, error messages or performance drops. Optimization is completely fine and you can enjoy the game without any technical problems.

Content and pace

The pace of the game during the first playthrough feels pleasant and balanced. The island is an interesting place and its exploration works well.

However, the problem arises during subsequent playthroughs. Unskippable cutscenes and the need to travel for a long time between distant parts of the island begin to slow down the experience quite quickly. On the other hand, several playthroughs are the key to understanding all the details and using the dialogue options.

Pros

- Nicely stylized and minimalist graphics
- Good technical optimization
- Great atmospheric and supernatural soundtrack
- High replayability thanks to the large branching story

Cons

- Sometimes very fast dialogues that require immediate reaction
- Slower pace and unskippable cutscenes with repeated play

Verdict

Oxenfree is an original story-driven adventure that builds on a strong atmosphere, quality sound and thoughtful stylization. If you like games based on dialogues, supernatural phenomena and the gradual unraveling of a mystery, this title will certainly interest you. Despite the slower pace with repeated play, it is a very high-quality experience that is worth trying at least once.
