Amnesia offers a surprisingly wide range of movement options - you can run, jump and manipulate with objects and chests to get to otherwise inaccessible places. The game also uses this mechanic in more exciting passages, where you have to use precise movement to escape danger.

A large part of the gameplay lies in deep interaction with the environment. The player can open every drawer, search every cabinet to find useful items or hidden paths. This system greatly encourages exploration and increases tension, because you never know if an enemy is waiting behind the next door.

The mental health of the main character is also a key element. Staying in complete darkness or looking directly at monsters causes to decrease the sanity, which creates pressure to save oil and light torches. The increasing anxiety is accompanied by visual distortions and sound effects, thanks to which the game feels even more intense.

Escaping from enemies requires caution - running only helps if you have a clearl path. It is always better to move slowly, crouching and without a lit lantern when near monsters.

Music

The music in Amnesia is not distinctive in the traditional sense of the word. The dominant motif can be found mainly in the main menu and before the end, but during the game, ambient sounds and unobtrusive musical undertones prevail, supporting the oppressive atmosphere. Although you don't have to memorize specific melodies, they serve their purpose exactly.

However, the sound effects are processed precisely. The sounds of footsteps, activation of mechanisms, murmuring of water or terrifying moans of monsters create a strong feeling of paranoia. Thanks to ambient effects such as wind, distant screams or vague whispers, the player constantly has the feeling that he is not alone in the castle.

Graphics

For the fact that the game was released in 2010, the graphics are surprisingly solid. Most locations are dark and cramped, which helps to hide imperfections and at the same time emphasize the atmosphere of fear. The lighting works reliably and the visual style generally supports the gloomy environment of the abandoned castle.

Story

The story of Amnesia is linear and accessible - the player is guided through the game by notes and diary entries. The main storyline gradually consists of fragments of the past that reveal the motivations of the main character Daniel.

The choices that affect the conclusion appear only in the finale itself, and therefore do not affect the course of the game. Nevertheless, the final decisions can raise questions about the morality and legitimacy of Daniel's actions.

One of the motives is the mysterious "Shadow", which haunts Daniel. Since it is never specifically explained what it is, the game leaves a lot of room for the player's imagination, which supports its mysterious atmosphere.

Optimization

The technical condition of the game is still excellent today. It runs smoothly, does not lag, does not crash and loads very quickly. Thanks to the simple system requirements, Amnesia can be played by almost anyone. The only potential problem may be the excessive darkness of some places, which can be easily adjusted by adjusting the gamma value.

Content and pacing

Amnesia has a fairly brisk introduction - you find yourself in a dark castle without memory and quickly acquire the main objective: to get to the inner sanctum and deal with Baron Alexander.

The gameplay is based on a combination of exploration, solving puzzles, avoiding monsters and watching over Daniel's sanity. The pace of the story feels natural - you gradually uncover the past of the protagonists and things that Daniel would prefer never to find out.
