Review of the game Sleeping Dogs
Markston • Nitro Forge Team
Sleeping Dogs continues to surprise with its quality of workmanship even after all these years. With its unique combat system, fun exploration of Hong Kong, and delightful atmosphere, it offers an action experience that still holds up today. But is it worth returning to the game after more than a decade?
Gameplay
Sleeping Dogs is very intuitive to control. The basis is the classic combination of W, A, S, D and mouse, while the contact combat system is one of the best the game has to offer. Gunfights are present, but the game's greatest strength lies in close combat, where you combine strikes, dodges and brutal environmental impact.
The game is surprisingly extensive - the main story is complemented by a number of side activities, combat challenges, street races and collecting collectibles. In addition, DLC adds new locations, story tasks and unique mechanics, thanks to which the game offers even more fun.
Music
The music itself does not stand out too much during gameplay, but it well underlines the atmosphere of Hong Kong. The most striking musical element is the radios in cars, which can get on your nerves over time - fortunately, they can be easily turned off in the settings.
The sound effects, on the other hand, work great. The combat feels believable, the city is alive with street noise, and the chases sound dynamic. Overall, the sound complements the open-world feel well.
Graphics
For a game released in 2012, the graphics are very solid. The stylization of Hong Kong, neon streets, and night rain give the game a distinctive visual that still manages to appeal after years. On the other hand, the age of the models and textures is sometimes visible, especially in the NPCs and some older animations. Overall, Sleeping Dogs ages gracefully.
Story
The story is one of the strongest parts of the game. You follow the fate of police officer Wei Shen, who infiltrates the triads, which creates an excellent contrast between duty and loyalty. The plot makes sense, is relatively long, and manages to captivate from start to finish.
The game doesn't force you to do side missions to advance in the main storyline, which is a big advantage. However, thanks to the freedom and the number of additional activities, you will still want to invest time in them.
Optimization
Since the game has been on the market for a long time, it seems generally stable and well optimized. It runs without major problems on modern PCs. However, there are some shortcomings - for example, significant FPS drops when driving a boat or occasional game crashes when restarting some missions from the DLC.
However, this is nothing that would fundamentally spoil the experience.
Content and pace
The pace of the game is balanced and Sleeping Dogs manages to entertain from start to finish. The story has a good rhythm, side activities are not boring and collecting secret items or completing challenges does not detract from the action.
The ability to choose between side missions, races, street fights or the story means that each player can find their own optimal pace. The game thus feels fresh even after many hours.
