Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs overview
About the game
Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs is a first-person narrative horror game developed by The Chinese Room and Frictional Games. Set in an alternative London in the late 19th century, the game focuses on storytelling, atmosphere, and thematic depth. Unlike its predecessor, it focuses more on story than on classic survival mechanics.
Story
As wealthy industrialist Oswald Mandus, you wake up in your mansion, plagued by nightmares and amnesia. You gradually descend into an underground complex, where the dark secret of a machine that is supposed to change the fate of humanity is revealed. The story works with motifs of the industrial revolution, morality, guilt, and sacrifice, and is told through monologues and symbolism.
Gameplay
The gameplay focuses on exploring the environment, solving simple puzzles, and avoiding threats. Compared to Amnesia: The Dark Descent, there is a significantly limited emphasis on hiding, managing your sanity, and physical interaction. The game's pace is slower and more linear, with the aim of supporting a smooth narrative.
Technical state
The game runs on the HPL2 engine and features detailed industrial environments with an emphasis on architecture and sound design. The atmosphere is enhanced by Jessica Curry's distinctive musical accompaniment, which underlines the melancholy and horror elements. The technical side supports the cinematic nature of the game and focuses on a consistent visual presentation.
