Half-Life overview
About the game
Half-Life is a groundbreaking first-person action game from Valve Corporation, which changed the way we look at the FPS genre in 1998. Instead of classic levels, it offered a smooth, cinematic story without interrupting cutscenes. The player finds himself in a closed research complex, where an experiment goes out of control and beings from another dimension invade the world.
Story
As a young theoretical physicist, Gordon Freeman, you participate in an unfortunate experiment at the secret Black Mesa facility. After a disaster, the complex turns into a battlefield between alien invaders and military units trying to cover up the incident. Freeman must fight his way to the surface and uncover what is really behind the disaster.
Gameplay
Half-Life combines dynamic action, suspense, and elements of logic puzzles. It stands out with its sophisticated level design, realistic environment, and intelligent enemies that react to the player's behavior. The atmosphere of fear and isolation is enhanced by the gradual gradation of tension and minimal interruption of the narrative — the player experiences everything directly, without interruption.
Technical state
The game runs on a modified GoldSrc engine, which was based on Quake technology, but brought advanced animations, physics and realistic environments at the time. Half-Life was praised for its innovative approach to storytelling and technical quality and became the basis for a number of successful modifications, including Counter-Strike.
Even after more than two decades, it remains considered one of the most influential games in history.
