Red Dead Redemption 2 review: An epic western tale of honor, loyalty, and downfall

Markston • Nitro Forge Team

Recommend

Red Dead Redemption 2 is a sprawling Western adventure that immerses players in an uncompromising world. It offers a realistic open world, a strong story, and extraordinary attention to detail. But can the game's vast scope hold up after dozens of hours of play?

Red Dead Redemption 2 review: An epic western tale of honor, loyalty, and downfall

Gameplay

On PC, the controls feel natural, even though they weren't perfectly tuned when the port was released. Today, the technical state is significantly better and the game no longer suffers from annoying flaws that would disrupt immersion.

The movement options are extensive. You can walk, run, sprint, sneak, ride a horse, sail a boat or travel by train. Later, fast travel between key locations is also available. Each move can be handled in a different style, and this is what adds variability to the world.

The arsenal of weapons includes revolvers, rifles, shotguns, bows and knives. Each approach to a mission can therefore feel different - a silent passage with a bow or a shootout with a revolver have completely different dynamics.

Random events are a distinctive element. Ambush, prisoner transport, bandit raids or helping strangers - the world feels alive and is never completely predictable.

Music

The musical accompaniment is exceptionally strong. Western motifs underline the atmosphere and the main musical themes return in various variations. Some songs can also be listened to separately outside the game and can evoke strong emotions.

The sound is precise - the ambient sounds of the forest, the bustle of the cities and realistic weapons work flawlessly. During the entire time of playing, I did not encounter a moment that would disrupt the immersion.

Graphics

The graphics of the game are, in a word, breathtaking. Dynamic weather, fog, lighting conditions and the day and night cycle create a constantly changing world.

The detail of the world goes to extremes - mud on clothes after a fall, realistic horse animations recorded using motion capture, authentic behavior of animals and NPCs.

The day and night cycle affects not only the atmosphere, but also the behavior of the world. The streets are emptier at night, different animals lurk in the forest. NPC routines support the impression of a living world.

Story

The main protagonist is Arthur Morgan, a member of the gang led by Dutch van der Linde. The story is divided into six main chapters, followed by an epilogue.

The narrative is personal, gradually revealing Arthur's character and the development of his relationships with other members of the gang - for example, with Dutch, John or Sadie.

Side quests often contain their own mini-stories, and some form larger side lines. Some can be easily missed, which supports the feeling of an organic world.

A weakness can be the discrepancy between story events and the honor system. In the main missions, the player is sometimes forced to massive violence, without it fundamentally affecting his "honor" value.

Optimization

The PC port was problematic at the time of release. The hardware requirements were high and the optimization was insufficient. On top of that, the controls were incomplete.

However, the current state is significantly better. The game runs stably, especially on SSD, which significantly helps the fluidity. Occasionally, minor bugs appear - for example, slower loading of models when quickly arriving in the city - but nothing major.

Over time, Rockstar has significantly improved the optimization. Today, the game offers a very good graphical experience even without having to play at the highest details.

Content and pace

There is a huge amount of content, which is a double-edged sword. To fully enjoy the entire game, you need to set aside about 100 - 150 hours.

The content includes, for example, side missions, mini-games, hunting, fishing, challenges and collecting activities - the world works even without having to complete the main story.

An important element is the honor system, which affects the reactions of the characters, the course of quests and even some details of the conclusion. This is not a radical branching of the story, but a subtle reflection of the player's actions.

The pace is initially slower and may discourage some players. However, once the player forms a relationship with the gang and the environment, the story begins to feel more intense and fluid.

Emotional impact

After finishing the game, I felt a strong emotional impact. Without spoilers, the ending can be very intense. I spent months thinking about the story and analyzing its meaning.

I think that's the mark of a really strong narrative - but it's also fair to say that the game can have a very strong impact on more sensitive players.

Pros

- Extremely vivid and detailed open world
- Strong and emotionally compelling story
- Excellent musical accompaniment
- Rich content and side activities
- Realistic animations and atmosphere

Cons

- Slower start-up
- Conflict between story events and the honor system
- Problematic PC port upon release

Verdict

Red Dead Redemption 2 is one of the most ambitious games of its generation. It offers a detailed open world, strong characters, and a story that can touch players emotionally. Despite its minor flaws, it is an extraordinary work that is worth experiencing - ideally with enough time and a willingness to immerse yourself in its pace.
